Prepare for the "Just In Case" of an Auto Accident

Nearly 6-7 million auto accidents occur yearly on U.S. roads. It's smart to be prepared by having a "just in case" accident plan in place like the following:

  • Build an Emergency Kit Cell phone on you, access to a notepad and pen or know how to use NOTES on your cell, a disposable camera if your phone doesn't have one. Other basic first aid supplies, drinking water, snacks, a blanket and a flashlight. Also add a set of warning triangles or cones and emergency flares.
  • Prioritize Personal Safety First If an accident immobilizes your vehicle in the middle of a busy intersection or roadway, keep your seat belt fastened, turn on your hazard lights, dial 9-1-1 and stay inside until help arrives. If your car is operational, turn on the hazards and carefully drive your vehicle onto the shoulder. IF SAFE, put out flares, cones or warning triangles, but don't leave the scene if the police are on their way.
  • Document Vital Information (ACCIDENT GUIDE) If the driver isn't listed on the insurance card, ask their relationship to the owner. If photos aren't taken then write down the vehicle's license plate number, make, model, color and year.
  • Take Photos of the Accident Site Attempt to take photos with your phone or a camera of the vehicles involved and the other person's Driver's License and Insurance Card. If possible also take photos of the accident scene.
  • Report the Accident Depending on the accident, injuries or not, the Police may or may not appear at the scene. You should still file an Accident Report with CA DMV. Police Across Country Are Taking Fewer and Fewer Accident Reports

According to an article published in PropertyCasualty360, fewer and fewer police departments across the country are responding to and reporting auto accidents due to shrinking operating budgets and more demands on protecting communities from civil unrest as well as domestic and foreign terrorism.

Media reports indicate that states that have been affected over the last 18 months include Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Nevada, Texas and Virginia. PropertyCasualty 360 stated that “private discussions with chiefs of police from New York to California reveal similar intentions.”

In these areas, police will now respond only in cases involving serious injury, criminal activity, hazardous materials or suspicious circumstances.

This is problematic for insurance companies, which count on police reports to independently substantiate damage, determine fault or negligence, etc. New potential solutions for insurers to obtain required accident information include:

  • Asking policyholders to take damage photos on scene and self-report.
  • Incurring the additional costs of staff, company inspection centers or independent appraisal resources.
  • Trusting collision repair shops to inspect, document, estimate and repair the damage honestly and fairly.

Use a Headrest to Break Your Car Window in Emergency Situations.

No matter how safe of a driver you are, accidents can happen. The headrest of car seats is deliberately kept detachable and sharp so that it could be used to break open the glass of a vehicle in case of fire or emergency. If you’re ever in an emergency situation where your car is partially submerged in or filling up with water you can use a headrest to break your car window. The car's glass too is kept easily breakable from inside. Doing this will not only allow you to get out through the window, but also makes it easier for you to open the door – since if submerged, it helps to equalize the water pressure on both sides of the door. Very few people know about it and thus can't save themselves in case of emergencies.

The Difference Between OEM Factory Parts and Aftermarket Parts

after-marketIf you ever need to have a part replaced on your vehicle, you may be given the choice between using an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part or an aftermarket part. While you may say it doesn’t matter, it actually does. Aftermarket parts can cause a number of issues with your vehicle.

Aftermarket Parts Defined
Aftermarket parts are those that are produced by someone other than the original manufacturer of your vehicle. These parts are often not as good as OEM parts are, and some are actually fairly low quality. This is why you want to make certain the repair shop you’re working with doesn’t try to cut corners and make extra profit by purchasing the cheapest aftermarket parts possible.

A good 80% of all independent mechanics who are not associated with a vehicle manufacturer make use of aftermarket parts. Dealerships, of course, use only OEM parts in any repairs that they do, which means they will use components that were specifically designed for your vehicle’s model. Your vehicle’s warranty may actually be voided if a repair shop uses aftermarket parts that do not meet the manufacturer’s standards.

Quality
The reason why aftermarket parts may violate warranty is that many do not go through a rigorous testing phase. These parts may simply not be as durable as OEM parts, and the manufacturer will not honor the warranty if such low-quality parts are used. There are often many different aftermarket parts that are designed to fit a variety of vehicles, but this one-size-fits-all approach usually leads to parts that aren’t quite right for your vehicle. With OEM parts, there is only one option, so it’s much easier to select the part that’s right for your vehicle.

Cost
Aftermarket parts are often less expensive, which is what makes them such an attractive choice. The price varies from brand to brand, and some are actually priced about the same as OEM parts. However, because these parts may be of lower quality, you may end up paying more in the long run as you have to replace them more often. These parts may also wear out unexpected, leaving you stranded without a vehicle.

What to Do—and What Not to Do—When You Get Into an Accident

car-accidentGetting into an auto accident can be a frightening and stressful occurrence.  In the heat of the moment it is very easy to allow some crucial information to get away, or to forget to write down something that you will need later on.  Here are some things that you should and should not do when you are in an accident.

DO:  Move your car out of traffic if it is positioned in such a way as to be a danger to yourself and to others.  On the other hand, if the positioning of the car is not impeding the flow of traffic and is not creating a dangerous situation, you should leave it where it is in order to assist the authorities in their investigation.

DO NOT: Get out of your car and run through traffic on a busy roadway.  Things are already bad; you don’t have to get yourself hurt or even killed by taking unnecessary risks.  If there is heavy traffic and you are unable to safely exit your vehicle, just stay put until the authorities get there.

DO:  Take as many photos and videos of the scene as you can.  They can be very useful later on, especially if you end up in court, arguing over who was at fault or what kind of conditions were present at the time of the accident.   

DO NOT:  Admit that you are at fault.  Ever.  No matter how much you might think you were at fault, admitting it will not help you and can even hurt you down the line.  This is not to say that you should argue with the other drivers; just don’t admit fault.  If they insist on getting you to admit the accident was your fault, politely tell them that you are sorry that the accident happened, but you are going to leave a determination of fault up to the authorities.

DO:  Get the names and contact information of any witnesses to the accident.  They may be crucial to your case later on down the road.
